Contact Lenses Do’s and Dont’s

DO

  • Always wash and dry your hands thoroughly before handling your lenses
  • Clean your contact lens case as they can be an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and replace the lens case on a regular basis
  • Return for your aftercare appointments and remember to wear your lenses
  • Remove the lenses if you experience any pain/redness/decrease in vision and return to see your Optometrist
  • Enrol on a regular DD scheme so your lenses are replaced frequently
  • Use only the products recommended by the optometrist and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.  Do not swap and change between lens solutions.
  • Always clean the lenses as unclean lenses can cause serious eye infections
  • Bring you case and spectacles with you to all appointments

REMEMBER – if in doubt, take the lenses out!

DON’T

  • Lick your contact lenses
  • Use eye drops or any eye medication without your Optometrists advice
  • Wear lenses if feeling ill or rundown can result in infection
  • Continue using same lenses/solution/case if you have an eye infection – discard all and your Optometrist can supply new lenses and sterile case and solutions
  • Continue wearing lenses if you cannot afford the time or the money to care for them properly

NEVER

  • Ever use tap water anywhere near your contact lenses.
  • Ever make a home-made saline solution
  • Wear lenses longer than advised
  • Swim wearing contact lens without water-tight goggles
  • Sleep in your lenses unless instructed by the Optometrist that its safe to do so
  • Leave lenses out of solution
  • Use lens products outside their sell by date
  • Lick your lenses
